Tim O’Brien, biographer of former president Donald Trump, recently issued a stark warning to Trump’s attorneys – the gig may not end well for you. In this article we talk about Trump Biographer Issues Stark Warning? Attorneys Brace for What Happens Next.
Appearing on MSNBC with host Nicolle Wallace, O’Brien pointed out that many of Trump’s past lawyers have found themselves mired in legal troubles after representing the controversial businessman-turned-politician.
“You don’t have many people who have come out better for it,” Wallace noted.
“I don’t think there are any,” O’Brien replied bluntly. He cautioned Trump’s attorneys that they may not even get paid for their work.
“If you don’t perform well in front of Donald Trump, he won’t pay his bills,” the biographer explained. “And this sort of trade off that, ‘I’ll get publicity or I’ll get a good paycheck, and it’ll be worth whatever professional and personal embarrassments I suffer on the way to that road show,’ I think it often doesn’t come together for people.”
O’Brien singled out Trump’s lawyer Todd Blanche for criticism following Blanche’s “performative” and “buffoonish” appearance in court earlier that day, which O’Brien described as “disastrous.”
“I’m assuming in his real life, which is a life apart from Donald Trump and being Donald Trump’s attorney, he’s a more calm, collected, sober-minded person,” O’Brien added. “But today he was buffoonish.”
As an executive editor at Bloomberg Opinion and author of the 2005 investigative biography
“TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald,” O’Brien has had over 15 years of experience covering Trump in depth. He previously served as executive editor of the Huffington Post.
So when O’Brien tells Trump’s lawyers to brace themselves, it may be wise for them to listen. Representing Trump has proven risky for attorneys in the past.
For example, Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen became embroiled in legal troubles of his own after years of work for Trump. He pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations and tax evasion and also helped prosecutors secure convictions for Trump insiders Paul Manafort and Roger Stone.
Cohen ended up being sentenced to three years in federal prison. Since his release, he has become an outspoken Trump critic.
With Trump now facing unprecedented legal scrutiny as a former president – from the Mar-a-Lago classified documents probe to the Fulton County election interference investigation – the stakes may be higher than ever for attorneys representing him.
O’Brien’s message to them is clear: Think hard before you tie your wagon to Donald Trump’s star. You may not like where the road leads.
