The Milwaukee Bucks enter the NBA Playoffs in an uncertain position. Two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a concerning calf injury in the team’s second-to-last game of the regular season against the Boston Celtics on April 9th. While the Bucks held out hope he could return before the playoffs, reports indicate the team is preparing to start their first round series against the Indiana Pacers without their superstar. In this article we talk about Bucks Reportedly Preparing Without Giannis for Playoff Opener.

Hopes High for Antetokounmpo’s Return as Bucks Enter Playoffs

Antetokounmpo did not play in any of the Bucks’ final three regular season games as he underwent treatment for the troublesome calf injury. There is no official timetable for his return, though ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Bucks remain “hopeful” Antetokounmpo can come back at some point during their first round series.

The injury could not come at a worse time for Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo was in the midst of another MVP-caliber season, averaging 30.4 points, 11.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 55% from the field. He earned All-NBA First Team honors for the sixth consecutive season while leading the Bucks to the third seed in the Eastern Conference.

Without Antetokounmpo, the Bucks struggled mightily to end the regular season. They went 1-2 in the three games missed by the Greek Freak, including an ugly 113-88 loss to the lowly Orlando Magic in the season finale when Milwaukee still had a chance to secure the second seed.

Bucks Brace for Playoff Challenge:

The Bucks are no strangers to playing without their superstar. Last postseason, Antetokounmpo missed the final two games of the Eastern Conference Finals after hyperextending his knee against the Atlanta Hawks. Milwaukee dropped both games as their title defense came to a disappointing end.

Now in the first round, the Bucks face the challenge of opening the series against a tough Pacers team without knowing when or if Antetokounmpo will be able to return. Milwaukee initially listed him as doubtful for Game 1, but have since said they are preparing for the possibility of playing the entire series without him.

If Antetokounmpo remains sidelined, the pressure shifts entirely onto the shoulders of fellow All-Star Khris Middleton. Middleton will be tasked with carrying the load on offense while two-way wing Jrue Holiday shoulders more responsibility on both ends. The likes of Brook Lopez, Bobby Portis and Grayson Allen will also be counted on to step their games up.

Bucks’ Depth Tested:

It may also require head coach Mike Budenholzer to dig deeper into his rotation after tightening things up late in the regular season. Backup center Serge Ibaka could see more minutes as the Bucks look to replace Antetokounmpo’s production by committee. Young players like Jordan Nwora, Sandro Mamukelashvili and Lindell Wigginton may be called upon for spot minutes as well.

The Pacers offer a tricky first round matchup even if Antetokounmpo was healthy. Led by rising star Tyrese Haliburton, Indiana has a young, talented roster that plays hard and scraps on defense. Milwaukee took the regular season series 3-1, though their one loss came in a game without Antetokounmpo.

Bucks Face Uphill Battle in Antetokounmpo’s Absence:

Budenholzer’s squad still has enough talent and experience to potentially navigate the first round without their best player. But Antetokounmpo’s absence undoubtedly makes the Pacers series far more challenging. It also greatly hinders Milwaukee’s hopes of making another deep playoff run if he misses extended time.

At the moment, everything hinges on the severity of the calf injury and how quickly Antetokounmpo can recover from it. The Bucks remain hopeful it will be a short-term issue. But calf strains can often be tricky injuries, especially for players that rely so heavily on explosive athleticism.

If Milwaukee can scrape by Indiana without Antetokounmpo, it could give him valuable extra time to rest and rehab the calf. But a first round upset at the hands of the Pacers would send the Bucks into an offseason full of difficult questions, starting with the long-term outlook of their three-time All-Star’s troublesome lower body.

The first glimpse at Milwaukee’s outlook may come as soon as Game 1 against Indiana on Sunday. If Antetokounmpo is unexpectedly on the floor, it would provide an enormous boost to both the team and fanbase. If he remains sidelined, all eyes will turn to Middleton, Holiday and coach Budenholzer to find a way to steal the series opener without their best player. I sincerely hope you find this “Bucks Reportedly Preparing Without Giannis for Playoff Opener” article helpful.
